Chapter 8 is the chapter of the Traffic Signs Manual which was issued by the Department for Transport.
It provides guidelines for companies operating on motorways on a whole range of issues, including the necessity for rear chevrons of retro-reflective material (section 5).
Is there a Specific Pattern to the Chevrons?
Yes. Stripes should not be less than 150mm in width and must be inclined at 45-60 degrees pointing upward to the centre of the vehicle. Stripes should also be alternating retro-reflective red and fluorescent yellow.
Are there Different Specifications for Escorting Vehicles?
Yes. Stripes should not be less than 250mm width on vans and larger vehicles. Stripes should not be less than 150mm on cars and car-style vans. The chevrons must continue in an unbroken pattern onto the sides of 300mm and should not be over the full height of the vehicle.
