Custom Logo Engraving - NearForm Technology

Every day we receive enquiries about our custom logo engraving and laser engraving service. Lucky for us, our laser machines allow us to delve into the world of the weird and wonderful and create things that are unusual and authentic.

Recently we were contacted by technologists and pioneers ‘NearForm’ and were tasked with manufacturing the badge surround for their NodeConf EU 2018 Digital Badge in Ireland and essentially etching their logo. NodeConf EU is the key Node.js event in Europe, providing a forum for the Node.js community that has become legendary in its own right.

Artwork was provided by NearForm’s talented designer Agata Surgot. Before moving to full production, we created a badge surround  prototype that could then be tested by NearForm’s product team and chief product officer Conor O’Neill. To meet the team’s brief, we chose a 3mm clear cast Acrylic whereby artwork was then marked on to the material using a process known as laser etching. The process of etching is similar to engraving but with the main difference being a shallower depth of cut - the result is a subtle engraved finish.

The technology behind the digital badge is really what brought the project to life. Even our own team here at PD Signs were blown away the first time the prototype was lit up. Not only was the badge aesthetically stunning in terms of the rainbow of colours displayed, the software and hardware features were in effect - astounding. Here’s just a gist of what lay within the heart of the badge –

•    RGB LEDS and back lit screen
•    Vibration motors for alerts
•    USB port for charging
•    Digital display of people’s names on the badge
•    Bluetooth broadcasts to anonymously estimate number of people in a room and generate heatmaps
•    Success metrics that used an accelerometer to measure clapping at sessions
•    Ability to receive and display information messages and alerts on the badge

The custom badges were a huge success at the event and received a lot of positive feedback. The project in itself is demonstrates a successful union between two worlds - that of digital technology and that of signage and suggests the endless possibilities that could follow.
